Purity and Freshness

The Production Process

Locally Sourced

Locally Produced

The secret to the purity and freshness of Tāne® organic pure argan oil lies in the production process.  100% of the production process from the purchase of the raw material to the extraction of the oil occurs within a 150 mile radius in southern Morocco. This minimizes the handling and processing of the raw product prior to extraction of the oil. The less the raw product is handled and processed prior to extraction, the higher the quality of oil at extraction. If the shells of the nut are bruised or the nut is exposed to non-indigenous heat and moisture climate changes, the oil immediately begins to deteriorate while still in its natural state.

The Berber Women

The key to purity and freshness in the production of Tāne® organic pure argan oil rests with the Berber women of Morocco whose knowledge and skills have been passed to them through the generations by their mothers, grandmothers and great grandmothers and who are today the world’s foremost experts in the production of the highest quality argan oil. Without them, the purity and freshness that earmarks Tāne® organic pure argan oil would not be possible. Each sale of Tāne® organic pure argan oil directly benefits these women by providing a sustainable and fair wage. The entire production process is 100% eco-friendly. The shells of the nut and the discarded kernels are used by the Berber women to make fires for cooking. The pulp is fed to the goats. The dough generated by the extraction of the oil is fed to the cattle.

Quality Control

Meticulous quality control is exacted at every link in the chain of production and is facilitated by the close geographic location of each link. The quality control process involves seven steps for the cosmetic oil and eight steps for the culinary oil.  Only the finest and freshest nuts are selected, every shell is manually cracked open with great precision and only the best kernels are selected for production. The oil is extracted using a mechanical screw press to guard against heat and moisture, factors that can reduce the quality of the oil at the time of the extraction.  This method of extraction is vital and superior to all other methods.  Tests have shown after two years of proper storage Argan Oil extracted using a mechanical screw press maintained the same levels of purity and freshness as when first extracted.  The oil is 100% cold-pressed and unfiltered.  Testing samples are taken, oil to kernel ratios are measured, and roasted kernel color analysis (culinary) is completed.  The oil is decanted in steel vats, placed in glass bottles and air shipped directly to retail markets.  This minimizes the oil's exposure to air a factor that will quickly reduce the quality of oil after extraction.  Both our cosmetic and culinary oil are food grade.

Third Party Testing

A sample from every batch of Tāne® organic pure argan oil is third party tested to ensure the highest levels of purity and freshness before it is bottled.  Tāne® is tested for acidity, rancidity, oxidation and composition.  Acidity, rancidity and oxidation measures freshness.  Composition measures purity.  Freshness measures the extent to which the natural ingredients have degraded during the production process.  Purity measures the percentage of fatty acids to ensure it is 100% argan oil.  Tests show that Tāne® always has the highest levels of purity and freshness at the time of bottling in southern Morocco.

Example:

Acidity levels less than 1% are considered extra virgin.  Tāne®'s acidity level is always 0.6% or less.

The European Economic Council Directive CEE2568/91 classifies the quality of olive oil based on acidity levels measured in Oleic acid.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Acidity<= 1%
“Perfect flavor and odor”, with a maximum acidity, expressed as Oleic acid, of 1g/100g

Virgin Olive Oil
Acidity 1% to 2%
“Perfect flavor and odor”, with a maximum acidity, expressed as Oleic acid, of 2g/100g

Ordinary Virgin Olive Oil
Acidity 2% to 3.3% (Tolerance of 10%)
“Good flavor and odor”, with a maximum acidity, expressed as Oleic acid, of 3.3g/100g

The third party testing performed prior to bottling shows acidity levels of Tāne® organic pure argan oil is always less than 0.6% well within the 1.0% level needed for olive oil to qualify as extra virgin.
